چکیده

To contribute the biological mean of CO2 fixation, more than 200 microalgal isolates were screened from lakes, ponds, sediments, hog wastewater, paddy fields, hot springs, and seawater in Taiwan. Two unicellular microalgae, Chlorella sp. NTU-H15 and Chlorella sp. NTU-H25, were isolated from hog wastewater. In the laboratory, they were able to grow up even in aeration containing CO2 up to 40% and have growth rates of 0.21 to 0.22 g dry wt l-1 d-1 at 20% CO2. Both algae had the same growth rate in the range from 5 to 40% CO2 and had a similar light response between 190 and 589 μmol m-2 s-1. Chlorella sp. NTU-H15 had a higher growth rate than Chlorella sp. NTU-H25 at pH 4.0 and ≥35°C. Chlorella sp. NTU-H15 was able to tolerate high concentrations of CO2, high cell density, and a broad-range of temperature and pH. Each liter of Chlorella sp. NTU-H15 produced 1.8 g of dry cell. The maximum growth rate was 0.28 g dry wt l-1 d-1, and the specific growth rate was 0.27 d-1 at 15% CO2. Each mg of chlorophyll produced 1.6 mM O2 min -1 at 700 μmol m-2 s-1 at 30°C and 10 mM NaHCO3. While each liter of Chlorella sp. NTU-H25 produced 1.7 g of dry cell, the maximum growth rate was 0.27 g dry wt l-1 d-1, and the specific growth rate was 0.27 d-1. Both isolates are suitable for dense cultivation to fix CO2 directly and to produce cell biomass.

Biofixation of CO2 from synthetic combustion gas using cultivated microalgae in three-stage serial tubular photobioreactors.

Coal is the most abundant of the fossil fuels, with reserves estimated at 102 billions of tons. The feasibility of using coal as a fuel depends upon reducing emissions of gas when it is burnt, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur oxides (SO(x)), and nitrogen oxides (NO(x)). The removal of CO2 with microalgae may be one of the most efficient ways of reducing this gas, without the need for radica...

Biofixation of Carbon Dioxide from Kerosene Combustion and Biomass Production by Spirulina

Background and purpose: CO2 is the main cause of greenhouse effect. Previous studies have shown that CO2 in methane and coal flue gas can lead to microalgae growth. The aim of this research was to study the CO2 biofixation by Spirulina and injecting kerosene flue gas. Materials and methods: A photo bioreactor was fabricated in which kerosene flue gas and air were separately injected. The ph...

Synergies between Geological Sequestration and Microalgae Biofixation for Greenhouse Gas Abatement: Life Cycle Design of Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage Supply Chains

We address the integration of two greenhouse gas (GHG) abatement options, namely, geological sequestration and microalgae biofixation, using a supply chain optimization approach. A multiscale, multiperiod, mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model is proposed, which accounts for CO2 transportation pipeline network design, algae processing route, and product selection, as well as the sea...

CO2 biofixation by Dunaliella Salina in batch and semi-continuous cultivations, using hydrophobic and hydrophilic poly ethylene (PE) hollow fiber membrane photobioreactors

In this work, performance of hollow fiber membrane photobioreactor (HFMPB) on the growth of Dunaliella Salina (G26) at various aeration rates (0.1 and 0.2 VVm) and medium re-circulation flow rates (500 and 1000 mL/h) were studied. Cultivation was carried out at both batch and semi-continuous modes in HFMPBs containing neat and hydrophilized in-house fabricated poly ethylene (PE) membranes at fi...

A Proposal to Establish an International Network on Biofixation of CO2 and Greenhouse Gas Abatement with Microalgae

Microalgae mass cultures can use solar energy for the biofixation of power plant flue gas and other concentrated CO2 sources into biomass that can be used to produce renewable fuels such as methane, ethanol, biodiesel, oils and hydrogen and for other fossil-fuel sparing products and processes. They thus can mitigate emissions of fossil CO2 and other greenhouse gases. Microalgae are currently us...
